Director’s Desk: The Soul of Museums
Yesterday The New York Times reported on ways museums are mining their permanent collections to create thoughtful and affordable exhibitions. Intelligent and innovative dialogue with the collection is at the core of our work at The Phillips Collection. Almost every exhibition embraces works from the collection, frequently in the context of crucial and carefully selected temporary loans, in order to share new knowledge from curatorial and technical investigations.
Our upcoming Kandinsky project positions an exceedingly important work in our collection in the context of related works from museums in this country and Europe as well.
Transformative new insights, derived from technical analyses, drives a Degas exhibition in the fall, celebrating one of our most beloved masterworks.
Of course, for such an economically challenged institution like ours, economic efficiencies are always an extremely important part of our planning.
